Martin Luther King, Jr Birth Home Official Georgia Tourism & Travel Website

Multiple attempts were required to successfully contact our tour conductor. Park Rangers were available for the self-guided portion of the tour which included the interior of MLKs home and the Ebenezer Baptist Church. Consequently, the tour had low value for the price paid since the admission is free to each of the national historical sites. Also, the tour omitted the Martin Luther King Jr Center, the Atlanta University Center and MLKs favorite soul food restaurant, the Busy Bee. Instead of the Busy Bee, we were given a 14 voucher to eat lunch at a newly built, modern Paschal restaurant that replaced the original. The food was good, but it had no historical significance other than the Paschal name.

Kristin did a wonderful job giving us the history of MLK and the entire peaceful movement to gain rights for the black. She was interesting and very easy to hear and was able to answer most any question presented. However Ebenezer Church was closed and that was disappointing. I think the tour could have been longer at the same cost. You can cancel up to 24 hours in advance of the experience for a full refund.

Historic Ebenezer Baptist Church (Heritage Sanctuary)

I enjoyed hearing the stories told about Martin Luther King Jr. & his family… stories I had never heard & things they do not teach you in school. Visiting the home where Dr. King was born and lived the first twelve years of his life is often the highlight of ones visit to the park. Unfortunately trying to get on a tour of the Birth Home can also be the biggest let down if of your visit. By following the instructions below and with a little luck you may get on a tour of the home on your first visit to the site. Birth Home Tours are limited to 15 people and are filled on a first-come, first-served basis on the day of the tour.

You're more than welcome to take another history walk with us any time. This was a poor tour in that the guide left us to tour the site and read about the history on our own. We didn't eat at Busy Bee's as advertised, as the guide said it's very busy on Saturdays and the wait time is too long.

Review Highlights

We are excited to share our Atlanta Civil Rights History. Heritage tour has been adapted due to Covid restrictions. Tour is conducted by local historian Ms. Stephanie, who has lived and worked in Atlanta for thirty plus years, and worked for Three Mayors. The home stayed in the family and became rental property for the family.

We were dropped off at another restaurant that we visited the previous day on our Southern Food Tour, however we should have gone to Busy Bee's as advertised. We didn't spend any time at the historic black colleges, as we just drove down the street and looked out the van windows. The guide was friendly however that's not enough considering the amount of money that's charged for this tour. This tour company should not be used as we believe Viator could find better for it's travelers.

The home was purchased in 1909 by Rev. Adam Daniel Williams, pastor of Ebenezer Baptist Church, for $3,500. Rev. Williams moved into the house with his wife Jennie Celeste and their 6 year old daughter Alberta Christine, their only child of three to survive infancy.
