PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — Local non-profit Blanchet House is celebrating 70 years of serving people in need in the Portland community on Friday. We met Leonard, an elderly man who lives in a tiny apartment infested with bed bugs. Even though his place is across town, he comes for meals at Blanchet House every day, wheeling his walker up from the transit stop. This year, Blanchet’s $2 million budget, which relies mostly on donations, has been stretched thin. The COVID-19 pandemic has led to massive layoffs across the United States and in Oregon, creating a greater need for the services that Blanchet provides.

At UP, the co-founders joined a social and service club named after the first Archbishop of Oregon, Frances Norbert Blanchet. Motivated by the charitable works of the Catholic Workers Movement, the Blanchet Club set out to offer food, clothing, and aid to those in need in Portland’s Old Town. Clean clothing, hygiene items, and sleeping essentials are offered during most meal services when available. New and gently used adult-sized clothing is donated by individuals and businesses. A Place for Mom is paid by our participating communities, therefore our service is offered at no charge to families. Our awards recognize communities with at least six website reviews from residents and families that average at least 4.5 stars out of 5.

(KOIN) — Blanchet House volunteers served hot meals and handed out warm clothes Friday through a service window as temperatures dipped. The nonprofit has helped the homeless for decades, but is seeing a growing threat from drug and mental health issues. Blanchet (pronounced Blan-shāy) House is a nonprofit social services organization located in Old Town Portland.
Men can live there for up to nine months – longer if their case manager determines it’s necessary to live successfully in the future, and if they hold down a job outside Blanchet or are in school full time. In these unprecedented times, people who have recently been laid off or lost housing are standing next to people who have relied on free food for years. “We’re serving nearly twice the number of meals" – 450,000 this year – "that we were prior to the pandemic,” Blanchet executive director Scott Kerman said.
Blanchet House in Old Town is the only nonprofit meal provider that offers hot meals three times a day, six days a week. SNAP, also called EBT, food stamps or a food card, is a federal program that provides money to low-income people to buy food. But many people don’t realize that there are limits to which types of food you can buy. Prepared foods like sandwiches, items from a hot bar, or meals from restaurants are not allowed under the program. This puts people unable to cook because of disabilities or homelessness at a huge disadvantage.
The average person would need to limit their spending to only $4-$5 a day to make the monthly benefits last. There is a very low chance that a SNAP receiver unable to cook is eating three nutritious meals a day. If you don’t have the ability to cook or safely store food, then your nutrition is limited to items that can be eaten without cooking. Then on Monday, May 2, the Founders Cafe reopened to in-person dining.
Beyond maintaining the Old Town and Carlton programs, Blanchet has major goals it’s trying to accomplish. The nonprofit has 12 full-time employees and hundreds of volunteers. Not only is Blanchet House grateful for Scott and volunteers like her, but the people they serve appreciate them as well. Many of the people that charity kitchens like Blanchet House serve do not know where their next meal will come from.
